The Fingers

To truly look at the palm, we must start with the fingers. To understand the fingers you need to remember a few simple basics. Each finger has three separate sections, representing three different aspects of your life. The section located closest to you palm tells about your attachment and relationship to the material world. The next section up, tells about your mental capacity to rationalize the things occurring in your life. The third section, the furthest from your palm, is the area of intuition, an antenna of sorts, of how sensitive you are to the thoughts and opinions of those around you. Ideally, the section closest to the palm will be the longest, with the middle section only slightly smaller, and then the third section slightly smaller than the middle. Moderation is considered the ideal in any circumstance, in relation to placement and surroundings. Excessive length or extreme lack of it causes imbalance, not just in the visual appearance of the hand, but in the life of the person you are reading.

The “Little Finger”

The “little finger” or “pinky finger” is my personal favorite. Not because it is cute and is the smallest finger, but because it can tell so much about a person. The little finger is ruled by Mercury, whose attributes it shares. Mercury is strongly connected to communication, movement, wealth, quick-wittedness, and versatility.

The first thing to consider is the length of your Mercury finger. This should be considered for actual length and not be mistaken for the set of the finger, which is often lower than the ring finger next to it. The overall length relates to the cleverness of the person… the longer the Mercury, the more clever the person. It can also relate to distance in a relationship aspect; it may be difficult for a person with a long Mercury to maintain lasting personal relationships. Now, the short Mercury finger is something to discuss. On the other end of a short Mercury, you will find someone who is not blessed with the gift of gab and is not naturally skilled in the art of communication. If you find them articulate and outgoing it is more likely the product of a conscious effort to change on their part. Another aspect of a short Mercury is in relation to that person’s comfort zones. Short Mercury likes to stay close to home; someone with a lot of hometown pride.

Next, we should look at the set of the Mercury finger. Draw an imaginary line across the back of the hand using the middle finger as your “average” set. Fingers that fall below this line are considered to be low set and fingers that begin above it are said to be high set. The most common set of the Mercury if it is not of average set is that it will be low set. This is most likely a sign of some sort of deprivation in the person’s childhood, whether it is on a financial or an emotional level, and is often a source of embarrassment for that person. If you should happen upon someone who has a high set Mercury, you have found someone who is very skillful and most likely successful in his/her chosen profession.

Another thing to observe about the Mercury finger in general is if it leans to one side or the other, or if it appears to be perfectly straight. Being that the Mercury finger has to do with communication, it would lead to its leanings being an indicator of honesty in communication (here is where the liar comes in). A leaning towards the other fingers of the hand is an indication that the person is attuned to the feelings of those around him/her, and could be considered tactful in communications. A leaning away from the other fingers indicates someone who is a bit of an eccentric. Someone who does not conform to the accepted norms that society wants to impress on each of its members. When the Mercury is straight, the person is a straight shooter as well. They are not very good at lying and they know it so they don’t even try, and they may come across as tactless in their comments.

Besides the leaning tendencies of the Mercury, there is also the angle of it. The distance of the angle between the Mercury finger and the ring finger next to it is called “the angle of eccentricity”. If the distance between these two fingers is not noticeably wider or narrower than the distance between the rest of the fingers you can be considered the “average Joe”. A tight angle between these fingers indicates the emotional need for companionship and tendencies toward co-dependency. Basically, the wider the angle, the more eccentric people will find you to be. Mild eccentricity can range from reading the dictionary and recycling, which does not noticeably interfere with the function of normal life. Extreme eccentricity can be as wild and wacky as you could ever imagine, from living off the wilds on a deserted island so as not to further endanger the environment to selling everything you own and becoming a missionary to Indonesia.

Finally, we are ready to look at the different sections of the Mercury finger. We will start with the section at the base of the finger nearest to the palm, in the material realm. This section tells the world about how you relate on a business communication level. What do you want to communicate to others about how you work in the business world? In people where this section is long, in comparison to the other two sections, they are very concerned with the outward appearance of their workplace. People with average length, as usual, are the ideal balance, and people in whom this section is short, seem not to be concerned at all about the appearance of their business, and often prefer to work from an office in their home.

The middle section of the Mercury finger should be only slightly shorter than the first section and reflects how you mentally approach communication. In people where this section is long, in comparison to the first and third sections, there is an indication of shyness and inability to communicate with other people on a meaningful level. These people often prefer animal interaction, to human interaction. An average, ideal, middle section shows a healthy balance between practical communication and someone who doesn’t let their imagination get away from them… too far. The long middle section is someone who communicates in the realm of the mind; they will think things through with every possible outcome and probably come up with some entertaining if not highly unlikely scenarios and their solutions as well.

Onward and upward, to the top of Mercury and the third section. This section of Mercury reveals your sensitivity to the communication of others. A long third section of Mercury is commonly found is the psychic, but is not exclusive to that profession or gift. This is a person who communicates through learning and is good with the written word. When this section is in balance relatively to the other two sections, then the ability of the person is average. The short third section is the sign of a procrastinator, someone who puts things off and doesn’t have a very good imagination. On the upside of a short third section, is the ability to get things done at the last minute and meet the deadline.

Along with the observation of the third section of the Mercury finger is the tip of the finger. The tips of the fingers can be indicative much in the same way that the overall shape of the hand can be, but on a smaller scale. So, I will cover it in much the same way.

The square-tipped Mercury is someone who should probably stay away from the field of public linguistics. They may have knowledge and skill in a particular area, but likely will not have the communicative artistic flair for presenting their knowledge to others.

The spatula-tipped Mercury is generally found on someone who is very good at working with their hands and can fix just about anything. They will most likely be involved in the repair or development of tools that are used for communication with others.

Lastly, the conical Mercury is seldom at a loss for words. They are natural teachers, love to talk, and are very versatile in their roles in life. A person who has an extreme conical or pointed Mercury has a tendency to take language and communication to an extreme; they live in a world of words and little else matters to them. They have a tendency to avoid becoming involved with others because they desire to be committed only to the words that they write, and in the reality that they create for themselves.
