Mountains and Valleys
We have finally made it to the palm itself. Being that the first section of the thumb is also a mount, we will start with there. The mounts of the hand help to determine the strengths and weaknesses of your overall personality. The easiest way to clearly view the fullness of the mounts of the palm is to hold your hand up, at eye level, palm facing upwards in a natural extension.
The Mount of Venus
The Mount of Venus is where you will want to look for answers to questions concerning love. It is the first section of the thumb, and ranges from the base of the palm to the knuckle of the thumb, just at the edge of the palm. It is often referred to as the Heart Chakra of the palm.
The overall appearance of the Mount of Venus can change as quickly as your thoughts. An average appearance would be moderately full and pink in color. As mounts are constantly changing, thinking of someone you love will be reflected fairly quickly in the Mount of Venus. It will start to become a brighter shade of pink and become more fuller. An overall blue cast or dominant blue vein running through the Mount of Venus is not common, and can indicate a severe case of the doldrums. It should not be ignored. This person is in severe need of a pick-me-up, so look for something uplifting in their palm to tell them about; focus on the good things you observe there more than the “other stuff”.
There is also something to be said about the different markings and lines that can be observed in the Mount of Venus. Smaller lines crossing the Mount of Venus are very common. Horizontal lines represent your goals and desires in life. The horizontal lines that actually reach all the way across the Mount of Venus to touch the life line represent goals that you have already accomplished in life. Vertical lines that begin at the base of the palm and reach upward into the Mount of Venus represent things that worry you. Vertical lines that are deep and run through the largest part of the Mount of Venus are signs of obsessive worry and concern about something. Normally, the vertical lines will not be the dominating feature of the Mount, and will reflect a healthy amount of concern for the important things in your life. Other markings on the Mount of Venus are possible, but not common.
The Lunar Mount
The Lunar Mount is located at the base of the palm, on the outer edge, or percussion of the hand, just opposite of the Mount of Venus. It is where we find the feminine aspects of our personalities as well as the relationships we have with women in our lives. It is divided into three parts much like the sections of the fingers, the lower third being the material realm, the middle section being the mental realm, and the upper section being the realm of the imagination. This is the only mount that is divided in this fashion.
If the top section of the Lunar Mount is the fullest of the three, great creativity is possible and is the strongest aspect of the person’s character. They are not afraid of being different and not fitting in with the crowd and will often deliberately do things to stand out. If the middle section of the Lunar Mount is the fullest, you are likely to think that person has their head in the clouds somewhere. Imagination is the only reality needed, but at least they realize, on some level, that they are “different” from everyone else. When the bottom of the Lunar Mount is the fullest, you may be looking at the eternal child. They desire or may even need someone to take care of them and shelter them from the world. The severity of this need can be cross-referenced with the shape of the hand and fingertips. They may actually be a well-balanced and functional individual.
The overall appearance of the Lunar Mount is fairly consistent compared to the changeable nature of the Mount of Venus. It will not usually change before your eyes, but gradually, over a period of days or weeks. The Lunar Mount should, ideally, be moderately full and even and pale pink in color. Color in this area can be deceptive if you are unfamiliar with the hand. On a Lunar Mount that you are familiar with, such as your own, color can be very informative. A dark red spot or coloring in the Lunar Mount can tell you of current or upcoming difficulties with your bladder or kidneys. The Lunar Mount can also inform a woman of an unconfirmed or upcoming pregnancy when the mount becomes fuller and pinker than normal.
Lines and marks on the Lunar Mount can either strengthen or weaken the energy of the mount. Vertical lines indicate a good imagination, but can be blocked from their creative potential when crossed by horizontal lines. Occasionally, you may see a square or triangle in this general location, especially if the person comes from, or has, a tightly knit family dynamic.
The Hills and Valleys of Mars
While the Lunar Mount is the seat of feminine energies in the hand, the areas of Mars are their masculine counterpart. Here is where you will find your temper (or lack of it) and your survival instincts.
Temper, temper. Active Mars is located on the inside portion of the palm, just above the Mount of Venus, below the major lines of the palm. It is usually about the size of an elongated penny. If the Active Mars is full and inflated you are likely looking at somebody who can lose their temper without much provocation and have a tendency toward an aggressive nature. Chances are that if you notice this on a palm, the person is already aware of it. The inflation of Active Mars is viewed in comparison to the inflation of the mounts located at the bases of the fingers. The diminished Active Mars are more likely to be interested in non-aggressive forms of expression. Most people have a fairly well balanced Active Mars and for this we can all be grateful. They know how to stand up for themselves, but don’t fly into a rage at the slightest provocation either. Markings on the Active Mars can be a warning indicator of a bad or violent temper regardless of the level of fullness observed. Where a red dot in this area can indicate the tendency toward physical violence; a black or blue dot indicates remorse for that type of action.
Survival is the name of the game for the Passive Mars. Passive Mars is located on the percussion (outer edge) of the hand between the head and heart lines. It is comparable in size to the Active Mars, although it is much harder to determine if, or how much the Passive Mars is inflated. Passive Mars will generally become fuller in the face of conflict and diminish when the conflict has passed. The fullness of Passive Mars is also related to self-confidence and the ability to go against the flow. Markings are not common on this area of the palm, but if they are present, they are indicative of deep seated beliefs and the ability to stand up for those beliefs.
The Plain of Mars is located in the center of the palm, between the head and heart lines. Here is where you can observe the need and/or desire to wreak vengeance on those who have done you wrong. Just because the desire is present, does not mean that the action is unavoidable. Because our lives are always changing, so also is this area of our palms. Markings in the Plain of Mars come and go daily, but there are those that remain constant for some time. One such of these markings is called the “mystic cross”. The “mystic cross” is a dominant “X” located between the Saturn and Apollo fingers on the Plain of Mars. It has been said, that this is this sign of someone that is interested in and has some natural ability in the area of metaphysical studies and the occult. A true reading of the Plain of Mars will take time, as it is difficult to determine which markings are temporary, and which ones are permanent. A black dot could be the person who cut you off in traffic this morning; or it could be a stepparent who put you through years of abuse. The dot caused by the person who cut you off will pass quickly; depending on how quickly you forgive and forget; but the dot caused by prolonged abuse will more than likely stay with you for life.
The Mount of Uranus
The Mount of Uranus is located touches the lower, interior edge of Passive Mars and the upper, interior edge of the Lunar Mount, on the head line. It is a relatively small area, smaller than the circumference of a dime. The Mount of Uranus is not observable in everyone, but is more likely to be noticeable in some one at the forefront of advancements in the area communications. The fact that it influences communication should not be surprising considering it is located directly below the Mercury finger.
The Mount of Neptune
The Mount of Neptune is located on the inner edge of the Lunar Mount, toward the center of the hand. Commonly, it appears as a valley between the Lunar Mount and the Mount of Venus rather than as being a mount itself. If it is viewed as a full or mount area, you are looking at a dreamer who has the ability to turn their dreams into realities. They are unconcerned with how often they are told that it can’t be accomplished, and accomplish their dreams just the same. This “mount” is located directly below the Apollo finger and carries its creative capabilities into the material realm.
The Mount of Pluto
The Mount of Pluto appears as an oval located at the base of the palm just to the right or left of the center. It is another one of the mounts that will not able to be observable in everyone. The Mount of Pluto is the only mount of the palm that moves at will. One day it will be there, the next day it will be nowhere in sight. Most sources will say that the Mount of Pluto is most likely to be visible on someone who deals with feet on a regular basis. A podiatrist or a shoe salesman would likely have a highly visible and predominant Mount of Pluto.
The Mount of Mercury
The Mount of Mercury, like the Mercury finger, is an active and communicative place…and, like the Mercury finger, is personal favorite of mine. Located at the base of the Mercury finger, it tells, and tells, and tells… whether you want it to or not. Let's knock out a couple of those nagging questions that we talked about in the beginning, because the Mount of Mercury is going to tell.
Significant relationships that you will have during your lifetime are found on the Mount of Mercury, as well as children in your life. We can talk about these together as in most people, they are closely related. A relationship line begins at the percussion of the hand, parallel to and above the Heart Line (that’s the top big line that crosses the majority of the palm) and moves horizontally into the Mount of Mercury. Usually, you will see at least one distinct line that meets this description, sometimes there will be two or more. These lines represent people with whom we have deep and meaningful relationships in life. Lines representative of children in your life are also found in this area, but are positioned vertically along the relationship lines. Keep in mind though, that there is no way to determine if the children lines refer to your own biological children. They represent children who are integrated with your life in some deeper way than just casual contact. Children lines may be very abundant in the hand of a dedicated teacher or daycare worker who works with or cares for children and becomes emotionally involved with their small charges, even if they have no children of their own.
The fullness of the Mount of Mercury is relative to your ability to communicate and relate to others on a business as well as on a personal level. The fuller that the Mount of Mercury appears to be, the more communication you will see going on in that person’s life. Often, the Mount of Mercury will not lie directly below the Mercury finger, but will be slightly off to one side or the other. A full Mount of Mercury that is positioned closer to the Apollo finger is common in someone with a high level of curiosity who will be content to research something they are interested in on their own. They are often more talkative and well versed in a variety of subjects. Their talkative nature does not lend itself to vocal speech alone, but also to their style of written communication. When the Mount of Mercury is positioned toward the percussion of the hand, it will lack the depth and stability required for some types of communication. Often, this characteristic will be evident in someone we would consider flighty. It is commonly found in children who have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorders.
Markings on the Mount of Mercury are often abundant and their specific locations relate to different aspects in life, such as the relationship and children lines we talked about earlier being located at the outer edge of the Mount of Mercury at the percussion of the hand. Two slightly oblique lines reaching towards the Mercury finger, directly below it or positioned slightly towards the Mount of Apollo, are the sign of a natural teacher. Five parallel vertical or oblique lines in tight conjunction below the Mercury finger are the sign of someone who is involved or interested in the medical profession in some way and show a capacity for healing. This includes, but is not limited to, works in a clinical setting and is not exclusive to the care of other humans. On the Mount of Mercury, triangles and squares are good to find, but stars and too many lines can cause a scattering of energy serve as warning signs for the dissipation of communicative energies.
The Mount of Apollo
The Mount of Apollo is located at the base of the Apollo finger and, like the Apollo finger, deals with your capacity for using your creativity in a productive way. The Apollo Mount varies greatly from person to person and is always the bearer of good news.
The fullness of the Mount of Apollo is related to the amount of talent that is being actively used by its owner. A diminished Mount of Apollo does not mean that the person lacks talent or creativity, just that they are not using their creative abilities in the day-to-day activities of their lives. The other thing to look for with a diminished Mount of Apollo is the presence of lines and markings that strengthen its creative energy.
Most of the marks that you will find on the Mount of Apollo will give support to the creative energies that it is home to. One or two vertical lines will give strength; too many will scatter the energy. Horizontal lines block energy. All other line type markings are positive for creative energies. Various lines configurations to look for are: crosses, stars, triangles, squares, hourglasses, and asterisks.
The Mount of Saturn
The Mount of Saturn is located at the base of the Saturn finger and like the Saturn finger, gives insight on how well you take direction from others. This mount is usually and ideally, diminished in most people.
Fullness, or rather the lack of it, in the Mount of Saturn relates to how controlling a person will be with others. An overly filled out Mount of Saturn will often signify a person who has a tendency to be or to become obsessive, compulsive in some area of their life. Often the Mount of Saturn is not completely centered under the Saturn finger and this can also be telling. A Mount of Saturn that is off center towards the Apollo finger finds its strength in leadership in the areas of performing arts and personal discipline. A Mount of Saturn that is off center towards the Jupiter finger will find its strength in directing others, usually leading by example.
Markings, especially lines are common in this area. One or two vertical lines strengthen the energies of Saturn, and as usual, horizontal lines block the energy. Too many vertical lines on the Mount can scatter the energies and cause problems in other areas. Triangles are good here and can lend assistance in a tough spot.
The Mount of Jupiter
The Mount of Jupiter is located at the base of the Jupiter finger and reflects the image you want to show to the rest of the world. If the mount is full and clearly visible, chances are you are already in a position of leadership in some area of your life.
The fullness of the Mount of Jupiter is often directly related to the length of the Jupiter finger. Long Jupiter = full Mount of Jupiter. Short Jupiter = diminished Mount of Jupiter. Not that it is impossible to have a long Jupiter finger and a diminished Mount of Jupiter; it’s just not as likely.
Markings on the Mount of Jupiter are a common occurrence and serve to strengthen or diminish the quality of leadership you are capable of providing to others. One or two vertical lines can support and strengthen leadership skills, where more lines will scatter leadership energy. Crosses and squares show a need for outside support on the personal side of a public leadership role.
